Domestic Violence Statistics

The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) recently conducted a nationwide one-day survey of domestic violence shelters to gauge the scope of the problem. Find the full survey results here.

In One Day:

  • Over 30,000 victims were sheltered by local domestic violence programs
  • Another 30,000 received non-residential support services
  • Over 21,000 hotline calls were answered. This averages to more than 14 calls per minute
  • Nearly 9,000 requests for services were unmet due to a lack of resources

Chemical and Mental Health Statistics

  • 1 in 4 Americans will experience mental health issues at some point in their lives.
  • An estimated 387,600 adult Minnesotans (age 18 and above) were in need of chemical dependency treatment in 2005. Of that number, approximately 7% received treatment.*
  • As of 2006, Minnesota had 233 adults in substance abuse treatment per 100,000 residents. Only two states have fewer adults per capita in treatment.#
